Make the Perfect Rum Runner |
Back in the 1950s, an exotic drink called the Rum Runner was born in a Florida tiki bar. The drink was named after rum runners who smuggled alcohol into the country through the Florida Keys at the turn of the 20th century. The bar blended rum with a banana liqueur and grenadine, all of which are available at Joe Canal's in Lawrenceville, NJ. Rum Runner VariationsDifferent bartenders usually develop their own cocktail variations and rum cocktails are no different. Most use both light and dark rum. The juices and liqueurs may vary, as do the amounts of each ingredient. Some cocktail drinkers prefer their Rum Runners blended, while others enjoy them over ice. One Recipe Preferred by Some Joe Canal's AficionadosHere is one recipe that some of us here at Joe Canal's recommend. The ingredients are expanded from that original 1950s recipe. For a mixed drink, blend two cups of ice with one ounce each of orange juice and pineapple juice, one ounce of banana liqueur, and one ounce of blackberry liqueur. Add in one ounce of your favorite light rum and one ounce of your preferred dark rum with a splash of grenadine. Pour into a hurricane glass and top it off with a high-proof rum floater (a layer of alcohol atop the already mixed drink) and garnish with an orange or pineapple slice. To serve on the rocks, simply fill the glass with ice and add all the contents, then top it with the floater. Another Take on the Perfect Rum RunnerHere at Joe Canal's, we enjoy experimenting a bit, too. So here is another version of a Rum Runner to try. Choose one ounce each of a favored light rum and navy-strength rum, such as Hamilton. Add one-half ounce of blackberry liqueur and one ounce of banana liqueur with two ounces of pineapple juice, one ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice, and one-half ounce of grenadine. Mix with crushed ice or pour over the rocks into a hurricane glass. Garnish with a wedge of pineapple or a slice of orange, and/or a brandied cherry. Other Types of Rum CocktailsThere are certainly many enjoyable rum cocktails that, if you haven't already tried, you may want to try soon. Here are just a few. The ZombieThe ingredients for a Zombie do not differ much from the Rum Runner. For the Zombie, you will mix one ounce each of fresh lime juice, orange juice, and pineapple juice with one ounce each of light, golden, and dark rum, like Cruzan. Add in one-half ounce of cherry brandy and one tsp. of simple syrup. Pour over ice in a tall, narrow glass. Navy GrogFor a traditional Navy Grog, you will need a three-quarters ounce each of freshly squeezed lime juice, white grapefruit juice, and club soda. Mix in a shaker with one ounce each of gold, dark Jamaican, and white Puerto Rican or Cuban rum. Add one ounce of honey and shake with ice and serve poured over a premade ice cone. To make an ice cone, simply fill a pilsner glass with crushed ice and create a hole in the middle with a chopstick. Freeze for two to four hours and loosen by running warm water on the outside of the glass. The HurricaneWhile nature's hurricanes move up and down coastlines, a hurricane cocktail can be served anywhere in the country. A New Orleans original, to mix this favored rum cocktail you will need other types of alcohol as well, and this isn't for the faint of heart! The recipe calls for one ounce each of your preferred vodka, gin, light rum, amaretto liqueur, triple sec, and one-half ounce dark rum. Mix with one-quarter ounce of grenadine syrup and one ounce of your preferred amount of pineapple and grapefruit juice. Serve in a hurricane glass, of course! Bahama MamaIf you are sensing a theme that rum blends well with fruit juices, you are right. The Bahama Mama does mix up the flavorings a bit, though. Mix one ounce of dark rum with one ounce of orange juice, three ounces of pineapple juice, and one ounce of triple sec. Add in one-quarter ounce of coffee-flavored liqueur, one-half ounce of grenadine syrup, and a half-ounce of coconut rum (Bacardi is a popular brand) with juice from half a fresh lemon. After mixing and pouring, you may choose to add about one-half ounce of Brugal Anejo rum as a floater. Serve in a large glass of your choice. Rum PunchRum Punch is made in batches for a party or special occasion, rather than as an individual drink. With that in mind, mix two cups of Jamaican rum with one-half cup of light rum. Add two cups each of orange juice and pineapple juice, one quart of fruit punch, and two liters of ginger ale. Chill and add a bit of grenadine for color, and orange and pineapple slices to float as garnish. Thumbs Up to Rum Runners and Other Rum DrinksRum is said to be good for the body and good for the soul. Rum can combat colds, relax muscles, and help you unwind from stress. Rum does not contain carbohydrates and sugars, but what you mix with it might.
